Mardi Gras 2017 Mission Report

Dear Great Commission Partner:

What a joy to partner with our sending church, Underwood Baptist (Florence) and God Cares Ministries (McHenry, Mississippi) to share the Light in a dark festivity. Thousands of people of all ages, color, ethnicity and gender fill the streets of Gautier and Waveland, Mississippi to participate in the Mardi Gras parades. We GO to give witness of Jesus Christ by passing out tracts, Bibles and share in one-on-one encounters. However, many people ask, “Why would you go? Should Christians even be in such a party, revelry atmosphere?”

Our partner ministry (God Cares) began this outreach over a decade ago and in the early years they encountered opposition and criticism from area churches.  One church leader said, “I don’t go to Mardi Gras and neither should you! It is not a place for Christians!” Still God Cares Ministries continued to go and provided a presence of Light amidst the darkness. As only God could design, the critical church leader led a Bible study in a local jail. On his assigned night he was approached by a guard who said, “I need to talk with you! Last night I went to a Mardi Gras parade and I saw this float with Jesus riding a white horse. The people were so friendly, smiling and someone handed me a tract. I didn’t sleep at all last night. All I can think about is Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Can you help me?” The church deacon led the guard to Christ! Hallelujah!! His attitude was changed and he recanted of his criticism aimed at those who answer the call of Jesus, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)

In order to catch fish, you must GO where there are fish! The tragic approach of modern evangelism is that too many churches and Christians fish in a cotton field and then complain about the lack of a harvest! My call during this season of my life is to build leaders who have a passion for the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and this involves teaching and going! Thank you for making that possible. YOU are a valued partner.

Our next Mission Adventure is fast approaching on March 9-16 to Chiquimula, Guatemala in Central America. The main platform we use to share the gospel is through medical clinics. LBL will partner with Frank Whitaker Ministries and lead a team of 37 including physicians, dentist, pharmacists, nurses and young people trained in the creative arts to share the Good News. Please PRAY for God’s abiding presence and power to be upon this worthy endeavor. Enlist other prayer partners and small group Bible classes to PRAY! As soon as I return I will send a report of all that the Lord did among the beautiful people of Guatemala.
